“1984”, “Farenheit 451”, and “Animal Farm”
I read each of these publications when I was a young girl. At the time,
I thought that the concepts were interesting, but the idea that any or
all of them could affect me in any substantial way, was absurd. Today,
we find ourselves banning books, totalitarian regimes exist and are being
exposed for what they are, and Big Brother is watching. The world has become
smaller, and somewhat more scarier than I ever could have imagined.
The good news in all of this, is that while Big Brother is watching “us”,
we’ve evolved into a tech savvy generation, defiant about oppression,
and choose civil disobedience to try to shift the evil ways of the corporate
world and our governments. There is no turning back.Technology has made the
difference. Big Brother may be watching us, but we are also watching Big
Brother. In fact, I suggest “we the people” are watching big brother even
closer than ‘they’ could have ever imagined.
With cellular technology putting cameras and video recording devices at our fingertips, we have been empowered to not fall victim to the oppression. Instead, we choose to record it, take pictures of it, and expose it for what it really is. I used to be concerned about the “Big Brother” theory but now I think “Big Brother” should be concerned about us, and they are.
Governments are trying to figure out how to take away the power that we have been given via technology. Block facebook, block twitter, and attempt to use SOPA and ACTA to keep us down. We the people find our way around it, and help other people do the same. The Tor project is a perfect example, and it was developed by a Canadian Company, which makes me even more proud to support it.
In conclusion, I think ‘we the people’ have finally realized the importance of sending a message to the government and the greedy corporations, that we have become “Big Brother” and we are now watching YOU and we expect great things. In the words of Anonymous , “We are Anonymous, We are Legion , We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect Us".
